Transportation Demand Management (TDM)

Transportation or Travel Demand Management (TDM)

Picture
"A more contemporary definition of TDM consists of maximizing travel choices, as stated in the definition provided in an FHWA report on TDM: Managing demand is about providing travelers, regardless of whether they drive alone, with travel choices, such as work location, route, time of travel and mode. In the broadest sense, demand management is defined as providing travelers with effective choices to improve travel reliability" (FHWA).

This definition of TDM incorporates many strategies not previously considered within the realm of TDM, such as road pricing, operational strategies that shift travelers’ route and time (such as advanced traveler information), and strategies that influence which lane travelers use on a given facility.  Another key aspect of the definition includes choices for all travel and not just commuting.

CommuteInfo
CommuteInfo, a program of SPC, is designed to increase the number of people who travel to work or school by riding transit, carpooling, vanpooling or bikepooling.

CommuteInfo staff works with transportation management associations, transportation providers, businesses and non-profit service organizations throughout Southwestern PA to help commuters find the best route for their commute by ridesharing. Increasing the number of people who rideshare, helps reduce the amount of harmful emissions that enter the atmosphere.

Traditional rideshare will continue to play a significant role in the contemporary view of TDM as it seeks to influence travel at the most congested places and times.

Transportation Management Associations

Transportation management associations (TMAs) provide a variety of services to both private and public sector employers and their employees. Services are typically focused on expanding knowledge of alternatives to commuting in a single-occupant vehicle.

Bike Share

Bike share systems make biking more accessible by providing convenient, affordable access to bicycles without the need for ownership. They reduce traffic congestion, promote active transportation, and serve as a first- and last-mile connection to transit. Supporting or expanding local bike share programs can help create a more equitable, sustainable, and bike-friendly community.
