Education activities include the development and sharing of information related to safely navigating walking and biking trips. Initiatives may be geared toward people walking and biking, as well as drivers.
Education programs may involve
- teaching walking and bicycling skills to adults and children,
- training professional drivers, such as local government staff, transit operators or emergency vehicle drivers on sharing the road with people who bike, and;
- developing campaigns to promote safety awareness.

Educational course materials
Educational resources are also available for use in graduate or undergraduate courses in civil engineering and/or urban/regional planning programs, and/or incorporation into classes in public health, public policy and administration, and landscape architecture.
"The FHWA Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation University Course is designed to help educators inspire the next generation of practitioners to support safe, vibrant, and multimodal transportation systems. Through this course, students will recognize the legitimacy of the bicycle and pedestrian modes; understand how policy, planning, and engineering practices can be improved to create a more balanced transportation system; and become familiar with basic policies, practices, tools, and design principles that can be used to create bicycle and pedestrian-friendly communities."

In Pennsylvania, motorists must allow bikes 4 feet when passing. It's the law.
Lowering speeds can save lives
Reductions in vehicle travel speeds can be achieved through lowered speed limits, enforcement of speed limits, community-based speed reduction programs and public education. Long-term speed reductions in neighborhoods where vehicles and pedestrians commonly share the roadway can be achieved through engineering approaches generally known as traffic calming.
